Buying a heating lamp based on a spec sheet is basically gambling. In the world of glass, the gap between the lamp and your workpiece—the “safety distance”—is everything. It’s the difference between a perfect, uniform melt and a piece of glass shattering right in front of you. That’s why we don’t just put tubes in a box and ship them. We come out and diagnose the gap.
The trouble with the “Thermal Gap”
Here is the thing about infrared energy: it’s picky. If the lamp is too close, you get a “hot spot.” The center of the glass screams while the edges stay cold, which puts a massive amount of stress on the material. But if you push it too far away? You lose that heat density. You’ll end up cranking the voltage to the max just to get the job done, and that’s a great way to burn out your filaments way faster than they should. We look at your actual footprint. We want to see if your reflectors are actually doing their job or if they’re just scattering heat into the void. A tiny shift—maybe just 5mm—can swing your surface temperature by dozens of degrees.
Power vs. Proximity
Big wattage sounds great on paper, but it’s a risky game. Too much heat too fast and you’re looking at thermal shock. If you’re running shortwave quartz lamps, the energy dives deep into the glass. You need a very specific air gap so the heat can soak in naturally without scorching the surface. And it’s not just about the glass. We check your cooling, too. When you’re pushing that kind of heat, your housing takes a beating. If your fans aren’t clearing the air, your sockets will melt and your wiring will just degrade. It’s a mess.
Why we show up in person
We’ll take a site visit over an email chain any day. We need to see the glass thickness. We need to see how fast your conveyor is actually moving. Most “drop-in replacements” fail because the person who designed the machine years ago got the distance wrong. We measure the actual heat flux right at the surface. Then, we tweak the position or the wattage until you hit your target temperature—without pushing your quartz lamps to the breaking point.
