Look, a single tube infrared lamp isn’t just another light bulb you swap out when it flickers. It’s more like a precision tool for heat. Whether you’re using a shortwave halogen tube or a coated medium-wave quartz lamp, the difference between a smooth production run and a burnt-out element usually comes down to how that lamp actually plays with your workpiece. The trap of focusing on wattage I see it all the time. People order lamps based on wattage alone. It’s a mistake. Take a 2500W tube running at 400V. If your focal distance is even slightly off, that kind of heat density will warp a substrate or melt a thin-walled PET preform in seconds. Voltage is what controls the current draw and how heat spreads across the filament. If your power supply doesn’t match the lamp’s impedance, you’ll get these nasty “hot spots” at the ends of the tube. And once that happens? Your filament is going to fail way sooner than it should. Glass, coatings, and the little things Then there’s the connector. Choosing between an R7s or Sk15 isn’t just about making sure it fits in the hole. It’s about how much current it can handle and whether it can take a beating from vibrations. On a high-speed line, a loose connection creates an arc. That’s a quick way to destroy a socket. We use quartz glass because it can handle the heat, but the coating is where the magic happens. Gold or aluminum coatings bounce the heat forward, which basically doubles the energy hitting your target. But there’s a catch. Coated lamps run much hotter on the inside. You’ll need a cooling fan or a heat sink, otherwise, you’re just waiting for the end-caps to melt. We prefer to come on-site and see the actual thermal footprint. I want to see where the heat is uneven and if there are air gaps in your reflectors.
