
Why Most Infrared Heaters Fail (and How to Stop It)
If you’ve ever had an infrared heater die on you, there’s a good chance it happened at the junction where the wire hits the heating element. It’s the classic weak spot. Especially in “splash-proof” IPX4 setups, people think water is the only thing to worry about. But the real culprit? It’s the brutal cycle of heating up and cooling down while sitting in a humid room. That combo just eats cheap insulation for breakfast, and before you know it, you’ve got a short circuit that brings everything to a grinding halt. The Problem with “Off-the-Shelf” Gear Most standard heaters rely on basic glues or some loose heat-shrink tubing. That works… for a while. But under constant high heat, those materials bake. They crack. They shrink. Once that seal opens up, water vapor crawls right into the terminal. It creates a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. We see this all the time in factories where crews spray down equipment or in rooms thick with steam. One minute it’s working, the next, it’s dead. Doing it the Right Way To get a seal that actually lasts, we do things a bit differently. We don’t just slap some glue on the wire and call it a day. We use high-temperature silicone potting and reinforced fiberglass braiding. It creates a tight, hermetic seal, but it keeps its flexibility. Compare that to those generic white-label heaters. They use low-temp glues that turn brittle and flaky after maybe 100 hours of work. Our approach keeps the insulation from burning out or peeling away from the quartz tube. A Few Things to Keep in Mind Here is the trade-off: a tight seal makes the wire a bit stiffer. You can’t just bend these leads at a sharp angle right next to the seal. If you do, you risk cracking the quartz. When you’re designing your mounting brackets, just give the wires a bit of room to curve naturally. We’ll take a rigid, sealed connection over a flexible one any day. Why? Because a stiff wire is a minor annoyance, but a short circuit that trips your breaker in the middle of a shift is a nightmare. And a quick tip: if your machine vibrates a lot, toss in some external strain relief. It’ll keep that seal happy and intact for the long haul.
