
Getting Glass Annealing Right: It’s All About Where the Heat Goes
Most infrared lamps just dump a general load of heat onto a surface. For basic work, that’s fine. But if you’re in the weeds with glass R&D—testing new chemistries or tricky thin-film coatings—that’s not going to cut it. When you’re working at this level, a few degrees of difference in the thermal gradient is the gap between a perfect piece and a shattered mess on the floor.
Why we obsess over power density
We don’t just look at the total wattage. That’s too simple. Instead, we look at how that power is actually spread across the lamp. If the heat is uneven, you get internal stress. It’s that simple. By tweaking the power density, we can shape the thermal profile. You can cram the heat into the center or spread it out flat across the whole piece of glass. You can even dial in the wattage per centimeter to match how thick your glass is. This stops those annoying “hot spots” that warp your material. You get high-density zones for fast ramp-ups and lower-density spots to keep things steady during the soak.
The trade-offs (The “Gotchas”)
Here’s the thing: if you want extreme heat in a tiny footprint, you have to be careful. You’ll need a rock-solid power supply. If your voltage spikes even a little bit while you’re pushing a short tube to the limit, you’ll burn out the filament in a heartbeat. And there’s the physical side of it. As you crank up the power density, the quartz envelope starts hitting its limit. You’ve got to make sure your cooling fans can actually handle the ambient heat around the housing, or your lamps are going to die way sooner than they should.
Making R&D actually feel flexible
For the engineers in the lab, the best part is not having to rebuild your entire jig every time you want to try something new. We designed these as drop-in replacements.
