If you’re running a nightclub patio or a lounge, you know the struggle. The temperature drops, guests start shivering, and suddenly your outdoor space is a ghost town. You need heat, and you need it now. That’s why we stick with short-wave infrared. It doesn’t waste time trying to warm up the air—which just floats away the second a breeze hits. Instead, it hits people and objects directly. It’s like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. But flipping a dozen manual switches is a pain. That’s where the smart stuff comes in.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Setup
You can’t just grab a smart plug from the store and call it a day. These heaters pull a massive amount of power. If you try to run them through a cheap plastic plug, you’re going to melt something. Instead, we use heavy-duty contactors or smart relays. Think of these as the middleman. The smart hub (whether you’re using Zigbee, Matter, or KNX) sends a tiny, low-voltage “hey, turn on” signal, and the relay does the heavy lifting of switching the high-voltage power. Then there’s the weather. Rain happens. To keep things from blowing up, we only use units rated IP65 or higher. It basically means the guts of the heater are sealed tight. If that seal isn’t there, moisture gets in, the terminals short, and your breaker trips. Not a great look when you have a full house.
Making it Automatic
The best part is when you stop thinking about the heat entirely. You can set up a “scene” where a temperature sensor does the work for you. The second the air hits 10°C, the system kicks in. The relays click, and the lamps hit full blast in a fraction of a second. You can also run everything from an app or a single wall panel. One tap, and the entire patio glows warm. It’s just… easier.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Adding smart tech makes the electrical side of things a bit more complex. You’ve got to make sure your industrial contactors are rated for the load, or you’re asking for trouble. Also, keep in mind that infrared is all about line-of-sight. It’s like a flashlight. If you tuck a heater behind a pillar or a big plant, that spot is going to stay freezing, no matter what your app tells you. Placement is everything.
