
The Struggle with Long Glass Bending Tunnels (And How We Fix It)
Most infrared lamps are too short. Period. If you’re running a tunnel kiln for oversized tempered glass, you can’t just slap a few small lamps together and hope for the best. You need heat that doesn’t quit across a massive footprint. That’s why we build custom heating units that stretch past 2 meters—specifically designed to line up in a continuous row without any gaps. Getting the heat right Here’s the thing: when you scale a heater up to 2 meters or more, you run into a real problem with cold spots. You can’t just “stretch” a filament and call it a day. If you do, the ends will burn out while the middle stays lukewarm. We avoid that by using a continuous array of high-wattage quartz elements. We spend a lot of time crunching the numbers on ohms per centimeter to make sure the heat density is the same from one end to the other. It’s about consistency. No surprises. Built for the shop floor We use high-purity quartz glass for the housing. Why? Because it can take the shock of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. And since we know factory environments are rough, we use heavy-duty connectors that can actually take a beating. We also made these units “drop-in.” If a section goes down, you just swap it out. You don’t have to tear apart your entire tunnel frame just to fix one lamp. It saves a massive amount of headache. The real-world trade-off These long arrays are a lifesaver for architectural curves. They get rid of those annoying “zebra stripes” you see when you use smaller lamps with gaps between them. Your glass comes out smooth. But, there is a catch. Pumping that much heat into a 2-meter zone creates a ton of ambient heat soak. If your kiln’s chassis or cooling fans aren’t up to the task, that heat just sits there in the housing. And that’s a death sentence for the lamp’s lifespan. Before you wire these high-output units in, do yourself a favor: double-check your airflow specs. Make sure your ventilation can actually breathe, or you’ll be replacing lamps way sooner than you want to.
